You may be suffering from a vitamin deficiency, lack of vitamins A or B can cause problems with your nails, it could also be a hormone problem, look here for some info on this.

i have bad nails...always have done...my diet is good and i look after myself. My nails arnt too bad but i just accept i cant grow them to any reasonable length. I keep them short and neat.

I put my bad nails down to genetics :o)

Try almond oil rubbed into your nails at night or soak them in it once or twice a week .Avoid nail hardeners as they contain formaldehyde and over use will weaken nails .Always wear rubber gloves for housework and use a good moisturising cream all the time. Avoid anything containing lanolin. I use aqueous cream on my hands and nails or Diprobase cream. .Try a zinc supplement.

I have always had problems with my nails similiar to yourself. A couple of months ago in our shopping precinct they were selling some nail products and in there was a 3 way buffer and shine like the one shown in the link above. I was told if I used it regularly I would see an improvement in my nails. I didn't expect too much, but I have to say, my nails are hard, shiny and the best they have ever been. You probably can buy them in Boots. Give it a try! Good Luck

I agree with qac, it really sounds like your diet is suffering. Holland and Barrat do a supplement specificly for hair and nails, which is worth taking until you can succesfully adjust your diet. some people cant get long nails but the flaking thinness sounds like poor health to me.
Adding to Shaneystar2's answer, I also use almond oil. The manicurist at my local salon advised me to use it; it was quite expensive - 5 for 3.5ml (it lasted for months tho'), but when in Boots yesterday I bought a whopping 50ml for just 1.50!
