Is there anything you can buy in the pharmacy to help or is it just a matter of watching your diet?

Available over the counter at all chemists. Only to be taken if you have a doctor's diagnosis of IBS.
It's a bloody minefield fruity, everyone has IBS for different reasons. It took me years to realise cooked onions gave me major problems, along with stress, If I ate a stirfry with loads of veg that would start it off as well. What definitely helped though was probiotic stuff, I take Multibionta multi vit which has it in, did me a treat.

Thanks daffy best wait and find out doctors diagnosis then my friend has all the symptoms of ibs but has not had it confirmed

Thanks also rocky will suggest she try a probiotic
I agree with rocky, what works for some etc. I know my biggest enemy is stress, the tiniest thing these days sets me off. Foodwise there's a list of things that irritate.
I find that mebeverine (Colofac) helps with pain and I'm certain I've improved since I started having actimel every day.
Certain fats set mine off - the good fats I'm ok with
Chocolate doesn't agree with me either
Stress also plays a major part for me as well
Mine also tends to be stress rather than diet. Mint tea taken strong and hot helps, also colpermin capsules and buscopan.
She needs to have it confirmed and that can only be done by colonoscopy (camera up the backside) excluding other causes for her symptoms.

After that I agree with the multifactorial posts.
there are meds, but i find them unhelpful for my 'temperamental' tum!

i eat live yog daily, wheat and yeast free diet and watch my dairy intake!

had indian yest and am dying today!
My daughter swears by peppermint capsules from Superdrug, never without them. She has tried other things but find they are the best.
I agree with Robinia that mebeverine (Colafac) is the best (I tried quite a few different ones before finding this one - it works wonders) its on prescription so see your doctor.
IMHO, actually the term IBS is a non-diagnosis of a specific disease, ie. what is left when you exclude all other serious diseases!

but i have it and what i have said helped me; everyone will be different, of course!
I take Mebeverine as well. I find I am better if I keep the fats and dairy foods intake down. Bummer as I like ice-cream.
You can buy small quantities of Colofac over the counter (which is good for emergencies, it always strikes at weekends/holiday times!) but see the doctor first.
Mine is also stress related, not diet. I'm also on Mbeverine and agree with the Actimel also helping.
