I agree with JJ, the overprescribing of drugs is costing the NHS £millions and is a concern for many professionals in the medical field, particularly antibiotics and anti -depressive drugs.

england yes
There are exemptions , I am exempt , over 60.
Question Author
just wondered as all prescriptions here in NI are all free.
As an aside a PPC is a good option for anyone with numerous prescriptions per month and has to pay.
£8.20 per item (unless the patient is exempt or has a pre-payment certificate) in England. Free to all elsewhere in the UK.

In England, yes we do, but as Mamya's mentioned, there are exemptions......I believe if you are on a low income and claim tax credits, or disabled, then you may qualify for a tax credit exemption card/certificate that either gives you free prescriptions or reduced rate.

I stopped paying when I was 58, (Eng) after major surgery and then needing Tablets for life, now about to hit 64 and not paid for anything since.
We do not pay for our prescriptions in Scotland. I think that this is wrong as there is only so much money in the kitty. If our prescriptions are free then some other service is bound to suffer because of it.

I used to pay for a yearly certificate as I am on 12 different tablets.
Aye wolf63, we got free prescriptions and a new Forth bridge instead of HS2. :-)
Also prescriptions are free if you have under active thyroid.
Nobody pays for prescriptions in Scotland.
all free in wales but i agree with wolf63 i think there should be a charge say £5 per script no matter how many items or something like that

i myself do think a certain amount should be paid - then they wouldnt be coming out of the surgeries/pharmacies with full plastic bags of them if they had to pay for them.
I find it difficult to comprehend any Dr issuing prescriptions without sound reasons. NICE guidelines apply across the entire UK (don't they?) so if a patient is walking out of the pharmacy then surely the GP has decreed the medications necessary?
jj

People need the same amount of drugs whether they pay for them or not. I am ill and need medication regardless of whether I pay for the drugs or not.
When my Mum was alive, I came out of the Pharmacy with carrier bags full - then had to sort them all and write her a weekly planner she could understand.

I wish she hadn't needed them all.
Free in Wales. I agree that there should be a fee per script. An elderly neighbour used to request repeats (she needed all the different drugs) but when she died I took 2 carrier bags of drugs back to the pharmacy - there were enough to last her for months.
Question Author
well you don't know what I do - unnecessary prescriptions - big time happen here.
How do you know that?
Question Author
