Following my last foray into this much discussed subject when I said I was trying a daily Magnesium tablet (250 mg from Holland & Barrett), I’m delighted to report that in the many months I’ve been taking them I’ve not experienced a single episode of painful night cramps in my calf muscles and feet. Just thought I’d post that in the hope of helping fellow sufferers.

Thanks. I'll try that. I get cramp in my foot but it could happen at any time of the day.
Thanks, I'll give it a go. I've been eating bananas, which seem to help, but not consistently. Also, I hate bananas.
That's a bit of a bummer, TheChair...
I take combined magnesium and potassium tablets, since insufficient potassium can also be a factor. I can't say they've entirely stopped the cramps (cold weather seems to be an element too) but they're very rare now.
Thanks for the update.
Magnesium supplements......scientific studies indicate that they are a waste of time, anecdotal evidence indicates response in some folks.
So.......it is a matter of "suck it and see."

I use calmag zinc tablets. I started taking them to try to stop the random bursting of blood vessels in my fingers and toes as I found suggestions online they they were to do with spasms in the blood vessels....they dealt with my cramp as well.
I'll try those Naomi, thanks.

Woofgang, if you see this will you tell me about the bursting blood vessels please. The reason I ask is that for some time, in my fingers, I sometimes get a sudden very hot sensation at a certain spot which then turns deep purple, stays hot and hurts. Happens 2-3 times a month. No idea what it is and what causes it. Is that what you are talking about?
I get that too Ladybirder. No idea why it happens either. Glad you have found a cure naomi
One is never alone with an ailment maize;-)
lol. Never, there's always someone :o)
hang on I wil find the link.....its harmless and the cause or cure is not known
Thanks woof x
Going to bed but I'll look out for the link in the morning woof. Thanks.

I went to see an imbecile gp about it in the height of summer because i had popped one on my big toe snd it hung sround long enough to get to the docs and he said he thought it was chilblains! anyway I did my own research and found calcium, magnesium or zinc supplementation suggested so I found the calmagzinc tablets
thanks for that info I'm diabetic and get foot and leg cramps often x
Naomi - as long as your style isn't cramped o:)
This might be a daft question but shouldn't you sort your circulation out before taaking supplements?
quizproquo, that’s part of the problem....it seems that there is NOTHING to sort out....no circulatory problems, no underlying disease, no genetic component, nothing. So far as Achenbachs goes, it seems that you are more likely to get it if you are female and over 50 but that’s all and its not limited to females or over 50’s. Its doesn’t lead to anything, it doesn’t seem to be a risk factor for anything, its just something that seems to happen to some people....that’s why I posted the forum comments as well as the medical link.
naomi,
still good? I thought I remembered a post on this subject, thank you for this x
