Is it late onset diabetes? Meaning (no disrespect) is mum over 40 and is she overweight? Diet and exercise will help, but sometimes you need a wee bit help from the doctor IE medicine.

I was diagnosed with onset 10 years ago. It took a few months before my sugar level dropped. Diet didn't work for me, but pills help keep my sugar level under control. Everyone is different however. Please don't worry about what you read on the internet. And don't be scared. I'm sure your mum will be OK. My Uncle lived to be 83 and he had type 2 and when he passed away it had nothing to do with the diabetes.

Thanks cowboy, It is type 2 that my mums got,She is slightly over weight but she has lost 8 pounds through her new heathly eating,I will try not to worry,But il also pass your info on to her,Thanks again.

She needs to talk to a diabetic nurse - does your GP practice have one? DN's are much better than a typical Doctor because they tend to be more practical.

What has happened in that the Pancreas is not working as efficiently as normal, and there are a range of pills that can help. These can help make the insulin created naturally more efficient, help create insulin or reduce the impact of food (primarily carbohydrates) on blood sugars. The mix and strength of pills is important in avoiding the more unpleasant side effects of diabetes.

It is important that she tests her own blood sugar and does not rely on the doctor to do so. Joining an organisation such as Diabetes UK can also provide information and support.

Finally, no-one should panic, or allow it to ruin any lives. The vast majority of cases can be controlled effectively (with discipline) and a normal lifestyle can be achieved.

I can recommend Porridge, as long acting, and also Apples, wholemeal bread Alisons is good, Onions and Leeks lower the blood sugars. Best to just have a normal diet, and depending on medication keep blood sugars between 4-5 to avoid going Hypo, Its best to have a Glucometer you can purchase one from chemist and only cost around 10 so can do glucose test before B'fast and main meals are good, and try to keep in 4-8 range, also if you travel keep it with you on a flight, if blood sugars go low and feel hypo Kendal Mint cake is excellent.also best to always carry something like small choc bar or lump sugar just in case need it. Not easy to keep blood sugars down but can be done just need to know what suits and to check some of the labels if you look at some of the bread it contains glucose also some other items which you would not expect it to be in, If I can answer any questions will, hope this helps.
