Liberty Bodices. They were supposed to protect children's chests in the winter.

Do you remember the longer liberty bodices for girls of about 10 to 12 years old, which had suspenders attached, to hold up the black woollen stockings which were worn for school in the winter.
i had to wear one but my sister didn't. they thought i was 'delicate' as i had asthma as a child (there were no inhalers or treatment in those days, just had to ride each episode out), and was very thin and pale. the thinking was that the liberty bodice would protect my chest - especially horrible after having had vick rubbed on first! it's the rubber buttons i remember, as you say shaney, going all sticky and funny.
Hi Schutz- sorry to hear that you have been feeling run down/delicate recently with a nasty cold. Hope you will be on the mend now + have a most blessed weekend. Went to a quiz last night with friends- we came middle of the pack( came 5th out of 12 teams) yet it was good to be with mates + have brain stretched. Do not remember liberty bodices-when were they around? Was a child of the 1970's

Morning Schutz
There must be a few mangles knocking around ! Probably museum items by now .
I remember ours was in the scullery .There was an old butler sink with just a cold tap .We had no hot . It was all outside lavs and a tin bath on a Friday night in my youth :)
Mother used to do the washing in what we called a copper and then I used stand in the scullery and turn the mangle .It used to be freezing in the winter and like an oven in the summer .
Hope your cold soon clears up . Plenty of hot and lemon and honey !

Yes we had a pulley thing as there was only a small backyard .No room really to dry great cotton sheets and stuff . Then it was all ironed with a flat iron heated on the range thingy .
After a while though I remember sheets and tablecloths being sent to the laundry as Mum got a bit more pin money from doing B&B in the summer. I used to have to lug the hot water up and down the stairs in jugs for the washstands !
You don't see them anymore either . I still have a china washstand bowl and jug that belonged to my Mum.
Nowadays I would be a nervous wreck if the washing machine were to pack up :))
