Large people on planes.

I popped over to Budapest at the weekend to see a friend who is working there, and on the flight I sat next to a lady who must have been at least 20 stone - she was huge.
In addition to taking up her own space, her size meant she was taking up probably about a third of my space as well, which made for an extremely uncomfortable flight.
This isn't the first time this has happened to me.
Should there be a booking condition whereby if you are over a certain weight you have to purchase 2 tickets - and if you don't, you don't fly?
The current situation is not fair on those of us within a 'normal' weight band who are made to suffer because some people can't control their eating.

Excuse me, but overweight people have feelings and rights too and should not be spoken about as though they are 2nd class citizens! While I have never had trouble fitting into an airline seat myself, I have had very over-sized people sitting next to me and yes, it was uncomfortable for me. But this is just they way they were and they were usually lovely people. Out of control children kicking me in the back have caused more of a problem. I think people who see a larger person sitting comfortably on two seats might be annoyed by this, especially if other passengers haven't been able to get on the flight because of "over booking". They won't be consoled by the fact that the larger person has possibly paid for two tickets. I say the airlines should stop treating passengers like sardines and go back to sensible larger seating. More comfortable for all!
"If the arm was down then they are in their own seat!"
That just simply isn't true - the lady concerned was spilling into my space.
Are you seriously suggesting I should have asked a stewardess if I could move because the person next to me was taking up a third of my room? How would that have made her feel (academic anyway as the flight was full).

airlines do know about this problem. Some have policies for "customers of size"

flip flop, you could write to the airline about it; if they haven't got a policy in place, maybe they'll think about it.

redhelen, xxx right back at ya! I do know how it can be. I went to the US for a bone cancer trial treatment many years ago. Within a few days of starting treatment, my body swelled up as though I had elefantiasis. It was so painful and my skin felt as though it was going to burst at any moment. Flying home in this condition was a nightmare, to say the least!
