Would a Tens machine be suitable for releiving pain prior to a hip replacement operation?

TENS machines can relieve many different types of pain. As long as you follow the guidelines and you are not one of those that must not use one it should offer relief with no side effects.

talk to your GP AND physio - they will both be able to advise you on whether it's a suitable option for your particular case... In general, I have found the TENS very useful in relieving pain.... but you really should consider the advice of both GP and physio as they will know alot better than anyone you may buy it from....

Lorcan - As others have said, it's always best to check with your GP before using a TENS machine, just to be on the safe side.

I wanted to use one for neck & back pain, but was advised against it, as I have a condition called 'Wolfe Parkinson White' (WPW) - that is an extra electrical connection in the heart.

Having said that, it might be fine for you & I wish you well after your hip operation. Take care.

My mother is a physio and often uses tens machines. The main problems come not from their effectiveness (you can control the strength etc) but from being too good. They can mask the pain so effectively that the patient forgets to treat the injured area with due care etc. However bearing in mind that you are having a hip replacement, it is probably fair to say that you would still have sufficient discomfort on movement for this not to be a problem. The tens is best used for constant pain rather than actute felt during walking etc, so it might be good for you. My mother lends them out for trial before you buy so might be an idea to contact a local physio to save you some money!
