How common are dry sockets? My dentist said that the pain is worse than the toothache in the first place. I cannot imagine being in more pain than I was with the abscess. He's really scared me!! :|

Hi erin,

A dry socket? ( I could, but i wont )........sounds nasty, sweetheart.......so you had the tooth out....why has the dentist scared you?.....do you still have the abscess?...or is that why he had to take the tooth out?....so who mentioned dry sockets now? x
Googled it.........looks quite nasty, erin.

Hope he gave you some anti-biotics whilst it heals up.....says after a few days.

I hope it does'nt cause you too much discomfort.....maybe a little salt water gurgling may help too...he must have told you what to expect and what to do for pain relief. x

Hi Yogi :-) I had an abscess and have been on antibiotics for the past week. I just had the tooth out a wee while ago and he told me that I could get a dry socket (when the blood clot dislodges I think) which is more painful. I just can't go through anymore pain, especially if it's worse than before :| toothache is the worst :-(
Oh erin.. .sounds not too nice at all. How are you feeling in that area now?.....and if he said "could get it", you might not.
Question Author
It's actually still numb! Lol.. I'm just really not looking forward to the next few days, just incase :-(
Good afternoon Erin,
I won't say "how are you"...
If you get any pain, a good old fashioned cure that really works is whisky and cloves.....

Lol :-) thanks Bob... If it gets bad, i'm sure my Dad could spare me some whisky haha :-) x
I had a dry socket; it ached but it wasn't agonising. I went back to him and he put some kind of seaweed in it, which seemed to work.

That's reassuring Jno :-) I honestly can't imagine more pain than I had before....
Many many years ago, I had seven taken out at the same time, and the dentist put them in a little bag for me to leave under my pillow.
I got a shiny pound coin from the tooth fairy, which I carried with me everywhere (pound coins were a new thing then), until I dropped it down the toilet.......
But I'm sure you don't need to know that.....:-) xxx

Aww! He asked if I wanted it back but I couldn't bear to look at it!! Lol :-)
I have never known it worse afterwards than having toothache before : )
Bit sore yes .. but at least you can sleep!
Wash your mouth in salt water for a day, too.
Wash your mouth in whisky for a day.............

Thanks Al... Maybe he was just trying to scare me... he has quite a twisted sense of humour. I went in tonight and the first thing he said was "Let's get that tooth ripped out! Emm I mean gently wiggled out." :|

I've got work tomorrow Craft! They'll think i'm an alky! Haha ;-)
Mix it with tea or something, and put it in a flask.....;-) xxx

(love the avatar, craft)
oooo abscesses, had those! Pain like nothing on earth isn't it? I had an abscess on one of my wisdom teeth, and to cut a long story short I ended up having all 4 of them pulled out at hospital.

Never had that dry socket thingy, but can only echo Albags suggestion, salt water is supposed to help a little.

Hope it heals quickly for you :-)
