How can she be a lesbian?
159 Answers
My friends mother has just come out as gay. I can't understand how you can suddenly decide you are gay. She's been married to her husband for 16 years. My friend is really upset and hopes that her mum is just having a midlife crisis.
Either it's a phase she's going through or she's always been gay? What do you think? What advise can I give my friend?

Bit late to enter debate.... I was married for 13 years befor e my husband left me for a man... he didn't act anything like any of the gay stereotypes... I then met a lovely woman and we were together mostly just as friends in the end for over 18 years I am now with a wonderful man... I am probably best described as 'the woman next door' I wear make up and feminine clothes and most of my gay friends are the same...
Try to respect your friends mum for finally being true to herself and support your friend get some more information from reliable sources the lesbian and gay helplines might be able to point you both in the direction of some good websites... things are much easier to deal with once you understand them better.
Finally your friends dad will need some time to get himself back together... he is probably questioning every aspect of his life right now, so your friend will need your support
try not to worry too much though these things have a way of sorting themselves out if people remember to care for one another
