Tempt My Appetite Please
77 Answers
The last proper meal I ate was around 22nd December! Since coming home from hospital on Tuesday I have managed to eat 3 spoonfuls of home-made veg soup, 1 scrambled egg and three slices of toast in total. I am prescribed one of those malnutrition supplements but I need to get back into the habit of eating. I have no appetite whatsoever so any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I think - on no scientific basis whatsoever - if you're poorly your body finds digesting stuff a distraction from other things it needs that energy for to be getting on with to recover, so appetite gets shut down.
It'll soon be telling you food is your friend again, just make sure you drink plenty in the meantime.

Hi Mrs O, some things that work for me if I don't want to eat are Heinz chicken soup with a piece of bread, and also OH makes me a lovely scrambled egg and puts a little bit of cheese in it, it its very nice. I'm a firm believer that you should listen to what your body is telling you to do and gradually your appetite will return.
Also when I was in hospital and couldn't eat, they bought me some little Complan type drinks-are you already on them? Hope you feel better very soon.

Something soft and easy to get down and not to rich and strong on taste maybe? How about some very soft bread with some tinned salmon in (or soft rolls with it on top),cut the crusts off sandwiches.
I was going to suggest boiled egg and soldiers or chicken noodle simmer soup which has really soft noodles in which all tend to lie at the bottom so you can only have them if you want, it's nice with soft bread too (you can chuck it in and let it soak it up and go all mushy).
I love iced lollies when I'm not too hungry, the nice fruity ones.

Minadex tonic is an old favourite to stimulate your appetite...if it is still available. It says it is for children, but adults use it too.
A friend of mine, a very old lady, swore by a glass of chilled champagne.
As others have said, it doesn't really matter what you eat when you have no appetite, just whatever takes your fancy or whatever you used to enjoy. Keep drinking, though.
(I've just checked, Minadex is available still from chemists.)

Hi Mrs O - thanks for email. Sorry you feeling like this, if ever I have had a sickness bug, as I'm recovering, I have had a peeled apple cut up into tiny pieces in a dish to dip into whenever your mouth feels dry. They do say a banana helps the digestion, contrary to thinking they actually cause indigestion ............... hope you are soon on the mend. Take care x
If I was feeling like you Mrs O I think something that doesn't smell very strong would be the answer, so that you don't feel nauseous at the thought of it. Something bland like porridge as excelsior suggested, perhaps with a spot of treacle if fancied, or try a single egg, scrambled with butter, or rice with veg, or a pot of yogurt that can be dipped in and out of when fancied. Plenty to drink though and don't worry. X
mrs o, when I suggested //make sure you drink plenty in the meantime//, what I meant was, of course, tea, coffee, juice, water, or indeed perhaps a little nourishing consomme.
If, however, the mood takes you to tear into a drop of milk stout, sherry or - the frankly soo much classier - chilled champagne, go for it gal!
