There was some research done in the US, where scientists studied the diets of over 42,000 women between 1987 and 1995. They found that the women who were less likely to to get heart disease, stroke or cancer ate more of the following foods:
apples, pears, oranges, cantaloupe melons, fruit juices, dried beans, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, greens, carrots, green salad, sweet potatoes, potatoes, baked or stewed chicken or turkey, baked or grilled fish, wholemeal breads, high-fibre cereals, cooked cereals, eg rice, semi-skimmed and skimmed milk.
