The need for 'reading glasses' is caused by the eye's inability to focus as fast as it did when you were younger. Called Presbyopia, it is generally believed to stem from a gradual thickening and loss of flexibility of the natural lens inside your eye. Almost everyone required reading glasses as they age… some sooner, some later. Managing with the readers...

It's not suitable for everyone. Last time I was at an opticians I was told it, or contact lenses, weren't for me. I'd no intention of getting either.
I am not sure as to what type of surgery that you require, but try:

It always used to be India for eye surgery, they were the cheapest and the best and I think they even provided a full package of the flight, hotel etc. It may have changed now!
you won't actually have to wear glasses all night, you know. Have you asked an optician what you actually need?
It may have changed but I thought only short sighted people were suitable.

//i may need to start wearing reading glasses 24-7 .// do you do that much reading?
Even with my glasses on I can't read small print.
get stronger glasses, ummmm?
I mean the small print on the back of food packets and stuff. It's too small for me to be able to focus on.

I have strange eyesight. I can 'generally' see fine, nothing is blurry, I can just see better with my glasses on.

My 3 kids are all considered blind in one eye, Inherited from me, apparently :-(

Diesel...why not just wear glasses ?
ummmm - I take packets of food to the fridge - for some reason the light in their helps me see the writing on packets a bit more clearly.

dd - depending on your age it may be that the change in your vision is down to you getting older. There is no cure for that.

i dont read that much ,no. though i find myself looking for my glasses most hours of everyday whether it is to look at a food label, look at internet, or look at an instruction manual or anything really and i usually have around 4-5 pairs of readers in the house . so its a hassle. i can see long distance actually long distance sight is exellent

no way, i dont want to look like a prat !!
India still does eye surgery package deals, flight, hotel, surgery all inclusive.
Google ' India Health Tourism'
If you need reading glasses, you're suffering from hyperopia/hypermetropia (long sightedness) as oppose to myopia (near sightedness).
Corrective surgery isn't suitable for everyone, as Sandy pointed out.

Managing with the readers is a relatively easy transition.

Fact is, no kind of 'surgery' will correct that deficiency. If, in fact, you experience some other malady which can be corrected by, say Lasik surgery, you'll still require readers for near vision.

If all you are experiencing is the need for close vision correction, I wouldn't worry about it… having said that one must always consult the professionals...
There are refractive surgery options for presbyopia but none that are cheap.

I could do it in my garage with a pen knife for £450. Is that cheap enough?

Also consider blood sugar fluctuations. I seem to have this. I have been trying to sort out my failing eyesight for months, thinking it was down to my brain tumour. Turns out I have gone diabetic and the sugar levels affect this.
My son (25 ) went to a private clinic in Guilford for an assessment for laser surgery (he couldn't read whatsoever without his glasses). The adverts at the time said from £395 per eye.
After assessment he was told it would be over £4000 for an operation to do everything he needed, along with lifetime support.
He said he wouldn't consider going cheap as he wanted the best available in the uk.
He had it done and 4 years on he amazes everyone with his ability to read barcode numbers from around 3 metres away. A total success in his case, but at a price !
I know he wouldn't have wanted to go to India for the follow up's.
