I am now beginning to think that we have above we have "bed dread"

Earlier on around 8 I relaxed on my couch - TV low and the fire glowing and I fell into rather not a deep sleep but a relaxed one.

Would give anything to have one of these when going to bed. I only relaxed for an hour.

Tell me about Conn. I'm still up having already been to bed .Having awful problems sleeping lately.Why I don't know ,as usually I sleep alright .
I don't even sleep during the day and could understand not sleeping at night if I was having an afternoon nap.
I read for a while and my eyes start to droop and I get down the bed then my mind starts racing and I'm wide awake again.On goes the light ,out goes the light ,on goes the light .Anybody watching would think I was signalling to the Russians :)
I've come down and got myself a large drink in desperation tonight .
But I'm off now for another try ....

was that after dinner and some wine maybe? That and a good historical programme on the telly soon has me drifting off. I'm also better at sleeping on trains (gently rocking) than in bed... as you can see.
I swear by a couple of cheeky wines to help me relax(mind tends to race too). If i wake up,I tried a tip to count backwards from 1000 .. most times you fall asleep again just focusing on the numbers.
I'm not a great sleeper and I sleep walk.
I don't sleep type though :-)
jenny, are you getting enough fresh air and daylight? It's amazing what a gentle potter in the bailywick does for your general wellbeing. So try a goal of a short potter - or a slightly longer one - every day.
If you're eating reasonably well and avoiding booze n pills, and you're not beset with worries, then you will sleep as much as your body needs to. It's just that we're ingrained from an early age to get '8 hours' or wahtever. Lots of people don't sleep very long, and lots of people sleep in 'batches' during the day and night, especially if not at work.
(I worked for a very well paid man who slept at work but that was pure cheek)
I can be struggling to keep my eyes open at before 10 pm sometimes, but I know that if I go to bed at that point I won't sleep at all.
I try to stay up til at least midnight and then I know my body is ready for sleep.
You might as well enjoy the relaxing bits while you have them. Every bit of sleep is beneficial whether you're in bed or not.

Mosaic I have to go get and out with the wee dog but there a crowd of ladies who who go here and -now I don't want to here and there beause they belong to the "old ladies syndrome) and I am avoiding like the plague.]]I have one to old look after Maxie and I wouldnt leave him for day on his own. I dont try the kennel effect on him as I know he would break his wee heart. NO DO NOT KNOW WHO WHO TAKE HIM -

at Ummmm - you would think that you sleep talk with many of your posters (mostly hurtful)
^^^ utter rubbish.
I'm not sure if ummmmm is around to defend herself at the moment, but I don't think her posts are mostly hurtful. I think she adds to the chat and gives advice as she sees fit.

Sorry, ummmm, if I'm diving in too quickly but I'd like to think someone might defend me if I were accused of the same while I wasn't around.
Sounds like you are making too much about going to bed and stressing out over things that can easily be sorted.

If you relax on the sofa just do that in the bedroom, turn the TV on in the bedroom, make sure its warm and then just relax in bed.

As for Maxie I assume she is a dog? I really don't understand the kennel comment and the comments about old ladies?
i have less than desirable sleep patterns, but I seem to get by. I work early earlies - 3am, earlies - 6/7am and lates 1pm, so my body sometimes struggles to know where it should be.

Some things that help me sleep: Falling asleep on the sofa watching a film. Going to bed without distractions: we do not take laptops or phones to bed. Blackout blinds are useful if having to sleep early. Also, headphones are a joy, there is nothing as beautiful as falling asleep listening to music, although there is always the worry that you will not hear the evil alarm clock.

Wind down from your computer/ipad/phone/tv at least one hour before you plan to sleep. The bright lights, the conversation (especially the online arguments) will keep you mind too alert to sleep. I find a hot water bottle is good for feeling sleepy

I get by quite well on about 4 hours sleep most nights, but I do catch up on my days off.
I once heard Sir Malcolm Sargent say that insomnia wasn't not sleeping, it was worrying about not sleeping. That's not really true but it gave me different way of looking at the problem. His remedy; get up and find something to do.
When I was married I used not to sleep well at all and at first got a small radio and earpiece to use during sleepless nights. But putting it on was disruptive.
Over the years it developed into an under the pillow loudspeaker with a volume control. I would go to bed with it very low and if I woke up turned up the volume and it meant I didn't worry.
In fact, if something interesting came on (BBC World Service ) I was likely to miss it as l'd feel relaxed and many times I missed the item as I went back to sleep.
I now live alone and have the radio on all night at low volume and drift in and out of sleep - and sometimes hear nothing.

JJ...I do talk in my sleep. The other night 'apparently' I got really upset and was hugging my OH because I thought he'd been lost.
