Without wanting to be rude if you are really over weight you should seek a doctors advice first for safety.
I did exactly this and loast loads of weight. It can get addictive as you set and break targets for yourself. I ended up loosing 3 stone and entering several half marathons and regularly running up to 16 mile on a sunday morning.
I would start off running on flat grass to begin with as running on the road can cause ankle and leg problems untill you get used to it esp if you are overweight.
I would start off with a walk before you have a jog to warm up your leg muscles - then build up into a gentle jog for just as long as it takes to get a little out of breath but don't over exert yourself. Then warm down with a walk again. make sure you do some stretching exercises afterwards to stop you getting stiff the following day - this really is worth the 8 mins or so it takes. The important thing is to build up slowly and not over do it. it does get easier Once you have built up a bit your stamina grows exponentially (or at least I found it like this). You must keep hydrated when doing longer runs. Drink little and often - by the time you feel thirsty you have already dehydrated considerably even in winter. Best take a drink with you. Also with the dark mornings and early nights looming don't go out on your own as their are some odd ones about.
Also dont comapare yourself to other peoples fitness just look at your own improvements.
