Is there any way of reducing the severity and/or duration of a black eye ?

Severity....a cold compress.
Duration...nothing can be done.

try ice cube wrapped it hankie
or arnica ointment

How did it happen?

Ice and make-up might help. Arnica doesn't work. I read it somewhere.
