In a few weeks my wife is having a para-thyroid operation. She is having a pre-op in a few days. Can anyone explain what this entails?

Normally bloods taken, blood pressure checked and heart rate and oxygen flow or at least at my last 2 ops
Same for me. Just general checks.

Thanks Squad.
Wasn't someone else on here asking about thyroid op or not

Perhaps Mexican18 you could say what made your wife opt for the op instead of the medication route
Bazile.......different operations.
Mexican's wife is having a Parathyroidectomy and yesterday's thread was about a Thyroidectomy.

I don't think that she was offered it, but her consultant seems to think that the op is the best way to go.
It is the para thyroid which is, I believe, not the same as thyroid. I'm not really sure.

Correct.
If your wife is a smoker they will undoubtedly tell her to stop. They did at my first pre op 15 years ago. Glad I never took it up again post op as I underwent cancer surgery and heart surgery since. I had lung/respiratory tests, blood/plasma tests, ECG,
They ask about drug allergies and general previous health.

My wife is a non-smoker.
Also throat swab and groin swab.
Had a pre-op about 3 months ago. Checked height, weight, blood pressure and took swabs of my mouth for ecoli etc. Also had an ECG. There were of course about 100 questions concerning the usual - smoking, drinking, exercise etc. etc.
I had this done 6 weeks ago. A couple of weeks before I had all the usual. Checks of BP, Oxygen levels, chest, breathing etc and chest. The anaesthetist talked to me and I was told not to take my anticoagulant medicine 2 days before the op. I had a cancer scare and had to 4 weeks before I got the all clear.
