Some of the measures do seem to be too late but the idea here as I understand it is to stop it spreading too quickly. That tho does mean a longer period of crisis. One danger of having a shorter period of peak is also that it might encourage a second possibly deadlier second wave before enough people are immune

Self isolation is largely to stop others getting it.
So in that regard “immunity” is irrelevant.
Although it’s not proved that you can’t re-contract it, it seems a reasonable bet. And furthermore if it IS recontractable (and it probably would be for future strains) then all the more reason to delay it until a vaccine is developed and tested.
As I reported elsewhere a new rapid testing pack has been developed on N Ireland and ought to be in general sale in days
