Salt Tablets - Are They Literally 'Just' Salt?

are they literally just a tiny amount of salt, shaped into a tablet or in a capsule. or are they something more? made differently?

and are they better than just consuming normal granulated salt?

joko, some doctors recommend drinking sports drinks which contain electrolytes ,sodium and potassium. Try adding more salt gradually to your food and sip drinks like Bovril with some salty crackers. I don't think taking salt in tablet form would be a good idea.

Aren’t magnesium tablets sometimes called magnesium salts?

I think that's Epsom salt, which is a form of magnesium (there's about 10 different types). Often recommended to relax muscles.
We do need salt, but there is so much added salt in food nowadays, so unless you cook totally from scratch and use just in cooking, most people don't need to add any.

When I was first travelling at sea with my husband and there was no airconditioning (mid 70's) it was medically advised to take salt tablets to counteract the salt lost through sweating. Even then, we were told to take them with meals so as to protect the stomach. Salt tablets were provided in dishes on the table at meals as part of the Board of Trade requirements. The advice changed over the years to making sure that we used enough salt on food.....If you have a medical reason for needing to raise your salt intake, I'd do it by eating salty food and not by taking tablets unless they are prescribed and monitored.
