The doctor is going to send me some info on Melatonin, what i want to know is, does any one take it. what is its basic use. He thinks it might help my sleep pattern. Would it interact with medication that i currently take like sertraline and BP meds.

Me and others have recommended you try Melatonin more than once but you ignored us. So I'll tell you my experience once again. I've been taking it on and off for years, only one 1mg tablet at a time. If I take it more than 4 nights running I get nightmares (always same one) so I never take it more than 2 nights in a row and not very often. Incidentally does anyone else...

is your doctor likely to prescribe it for you, or is he expecting you to buy a supplement?
Question Author
i believe he will prescribe it for me, once i have looked at the info.
i am unsure of it, and hope that some on AB who take it, shed light on its benefits.
Question Author
i resolutely refuse to take zopiclone, as i know how that made me feel, pretty awful.
Emmie could it be blue light from the computer disrupting your sleep?
Question Author
no Sharon, i fall asleep at the drop of a hat, no problem with going to sleep, its staying asleep for longer than a few hours, i wake after bad dreams, go back to bed sleep bit longer, wake fully by around 5am.

i don't use the computer before going to bed.
there are several people (at least) who take it. ladybirder and calmac are two that spring to mind
Question Author
ok, hopefully they will look in and can give me some pointers. i am loathe to take more medication, but if it helps then maybe.
Emmie I have been taking a melatonin supplement for two years now. I also take other meds and have no side effects. I have posted on this before for you. I get mine from Amazon UK. It is a natural product fro Montmorency Cherry which has a natural source of melatonin. If I do wake during the night it is for no more than 10 minutes. It does take about a week to build up but I saw a difference within 3 days. I did speak to my doctor before starting to take it and he gave the go ahead. I cannot get it here on prescription which is why I take the natural one. Hope this helps
PS I very seldom dream
Here is an overview on melatonin...it has a lot of useful information.

If I take it more than 4 nights running I get nightmares (always same one) so I never take it more than 2 nights in a row and not very often. Incidentally does anyone else have nightmares when taking it? If I haven't managed to have much sleep for a couple of nights then I will take one. I can go weeks without taking any but suddenly I will hit a bad patch and I'm so glad I have Melatonin on my bedside table.
I read our bodies make Melatonin but we make less of it as we get older when arguably we need it more. Because I have problems with nightmares doesn't mean you will so give it a try, no harm done if the doc says it's OK with your current meds. And try and keep regular sleeping hours such as bed at 11pm, up at 7am. Good luck with it Em.
Calmk and ladybirder, could you possibly post the name of the product you buy on amazon please? I’d be very interested as I regularly go through bad patches of not sleeping and was only yesterday talking about melatonin. Thanks.

Thanks calmk, am going to order some when we’re back home.
I’m always wary of ordering things like this from the internet so it’s good to hear from someone who has done so for a while with no problems.
Thanks again.
The reviews are mixed with some finding it helpful and some not. Don't know if there is a psychological aspect to those it helps and those it doesn't.
um - have I got this right?
you have asked your doctor to prescribe Melatonin - it is safe by the way

and you are not sure if it is safe - - - so you ask us?

anyway it is used as a premed in children so is supersafe

https://associationofanaesthetists-publications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/anae.15249?af=R

the only thing is that it doesnt work
very well - Sury found in children he had to add in a further sedative and then it did work
No PP her doctor thinks it might help her but she is still asking here again. Same answers were given previously
Even if you fall asleep okay blue light can still affect the quality of the sleep you get after. It suppresses natural production of melatonin so your brain may think it day time and not let you sleep long.
