the problem (i believe) is one of expectation Vs reality. I once bought my husband a steam iron as a gift and he was delighted with it. If he'd bought me one though, i probably would have grumbled and shoved it in the back of the cupboard or gone through his wallet for the receipt before the iron mysteriously disappeared out of our lives forever. SR expects to get socks, therefore it's not a problem for him to grit his teeth and smile
