On a serious note, I am sure your friend's husband thought he was doing the right thing.

The problem is, as I pointed out, and has been illustrated by the ladies who have posted thus far, no woman ever wants anyone to point out the fact that she has constructed a small veranda over the fun palace - unless its a strictly women-only conversation, and usually, alcohol will have been consumed first.

You could say if she was concerned about her weight and had discussed it seriously with him, then he was being thoughtful and helpful. It doesn't sound as if that's quite what happened, though.
