As I understand it period poverty affects few, but very often those it does affect are from ethnic minorities. I think the real problem is education and an unwillingness to address something that isn't much talked about. I knew one such family whose daughter, rather than ask her mother to get her what she needed, depended upon paper tissues.

I think these would be a great buy for any young girl starting her periods. One or two packs dependant on heaviness and number of days and also environmentally friendly. They can be rinsed before washing.

Kind of what women used (rags) before the invention of towels but more user friendly. And although I never used one, I think the 'cup' can replace tampons for swimming etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the cup, ta!

I had a friend who swam when she had periods using tampons. Knowing myself, I could never have done that.

The idea of bloody tampons in the weekly wash I find rather repellent. But what do I know, I'm a mere man.

Incidentally I wouldn't object to a few extra bob on my tax bill to supply free tampons for all, it would be a appropriate gesture for a civilised society.

P.S. I wonder if Camilla would put Charles through the wash if ever he gained his expressed desire to become her tampon LOL.

i have used re-useables for a couple of years now. I use period pants (and you can get period swimming bottoms too!). They just go in the washing machine with other stuff in my house

Period products are a lot cheaper than when I had to buy them for me and my daughter. My mum also used rags, and my sister and me had to use them before we bought our own. Used to put them in a bucket of soapy water before washing them.

Same as nappies, Cashier. We soaked and washed them. A much better option and far cheaper than dispoable nappies that are now available

Everyone who's shocked about putting washable tampons in the laundry...what on earth do you think happens when due to being caught out, or heavy leakage through a sanitary towel, the result is stained knickers? Throw them out?...or pre-soak then into the wash? Certainly we've all been there?
