be too heavy for me to lift in and out of my car boot? I reckon it would be OK lifting out but not sure about lifting in. The scooter folds at the push of a button so no taking to bits to load into the car. More expensive of course but worth it to me. Perhaps you know of someone who uses one or have one yourself? Thanks.

Yes I could go to a shop and have a look but cba at the moment. I will have to pay the cost of returning it if it's not right for me but that's fair enough.

Nearly the weight of the old sack of potatoes many folk used to buy. I think it's heavy, depends on the shape and your car boot - how high will you have to lift it, will you have to lift it over a deep lip or is your boot flat? Will you be able to hold it firmly in the middle or only at the top?
How strong are you?
About the weight of half a bag of coal, I wouldn't fancy heaving that about on a regular basis.

A friend has been crippled with arthritis since childhood and has a hoist in the back of his Volvo 4x4 to whee his scooter in and out.
21.5kg is around the weight of a mid-large size full suitcase.

You could fill a suitcase and check its weight using bathroom scales and then see how easily you can lift it in and out of your boot.
A link to the scooter would be good, to give an idea of the size of it folded
A suitcase has a convenient handle for lifting.
I don't think this would possible for you, particularly if you need a mobility scooter to move around.
Are there lighter models available ?
it is heavier that the maximum allowed at my work for a 1 person (man) lift. if you could use bigger joints it just might be do-able, for example using a strop and your shoulders rather than hands/wrists/elbows. i wouldnt be abl to do it.
What would you need it for? I presume it can live in your car when you are at home (can the battery come out for charging?) but you need it when out. There are usually people around who would be able to help, especiaally if you were careful where you wanted to go

Ooops sorry, got caught up watching Andy Murray at Wimblydon.

Here you go Barrie.

It has to go into a Honda Jazz either in the boot or I could possibly get it onto the back seat. It will live in the car. I will drive to the park and take it out when we get there. The boot does have a bit of a lip. I wouldn't be doing it every day Dougie, only when I don't have a dog walker. One of my relatives is 61 and carries a 3.5 stone Bull Dog up two flights of stairs.

Hymie that's a good idea. I've got a travel bag but I guess I might have to empty my bookshelves of books to get to 3.5 stone.

Hmmm, going to a shop s starting to look like the better option. I wouldn't be buying from them though as everywhere else it's near on or more than double the price.

Yes bn, the battery does come out for charging. I know any people passing my car where I live will offer to help, plus the guys in my flats.
Question Author
Yes AA there are but you have to take them to bits, usually 5 pieces, and I'm not doing that.
That link is very useful, lb. It is very bulky when folded and looks awkward to lift, not something that can easily be grasped with two hands and lifted close to the body. I've been scouring YouTube but can only find vids that show it closing and being lifted upright, not lifted in a boot.
You are going to have to ditch your cba and get down the shop to try out. If the staff are any good they'll let you try getting it in to your boot.
A lot of the weight is in the battery, take it out to lift the scooter, they slot back in place pretty easily once the scooter is needed.

Hoppy, you could be right. I need to think more about it. My enthusiasm is waning. Especially faffing about with the battery as Rowan says. I'm also uncomfortable with the idea of going to a shop to have a demonstration and then buying it elsewhere. An alternative would be to hire one for a week or two.

Thank you all, its good to have a natter about things and get helpful suggestions. xxxxxx

My mother has a basic mobility scooter. I have no idea how to remove the battery.

I certainly would never try to lift the scooter on my own.

Great Hoppy, that obviously suits your mum. I just don't have the space for one of those.
Hi ladybirder :) I know you live B&H way, have you considered visiting Shopmobility? I think some ads we see on tv can be mis-leading so would advise going somewhere you can see various models and see what might suit best. Not sure how up to date the prices are but it quotes £5 for 1 day hire. Worth considering before a big outlay. Shop mobility can deliver and collect. Worth a call perhaps? Good luck.

Shopmobility is non-profit making so I thought you might get straight answers from them, if you get my drift ;)
A standard size bag of sugar weighs 1kg.
Ask yourself this - how would you feel lifting 21 of them??
Question Author
Thank you Choux. I have been looking at your suggestions since you posted and it's interesting stuff. I'm too tired to look anymore tonight but will continue tomorrow.
Giz I'll be in local shop in the morning with a black sack loaded with 21 bags of sugar. Thank you also.

Good night. Sleep tight.
a Jazz's boot isn't very big, at least mine isn't, and there is quite a lip. The specifications seem to give the size unfolded; you might need to ask what they are when you fold it.
