i am nearly always bloated even after eating something light like a sandwich if bread is the cause of this and i was to give it up what would be a good replacement, bread is one of my favourite foods by the way so i do tend to eat quite alot sometimes as much as 6 slices a day.

Try a Gluten free bread you sound as though you are intolerant to Gluten which is found in bread. Do you have IBS?, You can be tested to see if your Gluten intolerant by giving blood. See GP
sounds like a lack of fibre to me, also probably water retention. Do you eat a lot of salt? processed foods? sugar? white bread?
Giving up bread is hard when you rely on it so much, but I gave it up for 6 months and had toasted rye bread (can buy from Holland and Barrett) which is wheat free, and oatcakes for lunch with peanut butter or houmous. You can have wheat-free ryvita and rice cakes too.
try eating brown granary wholemeal bread and see what happens then. if still bloated, you're best giving it up. try giving it up for a week, and see if you feel a difference. If you do, try rye bread, ryvita's. remember, it takes 2 weeks for your taste buds to get used to something so in theory, after two weeks something tasting bad will not taste so bad.
Are you eating white bread? Also, cutting down on the amount of bread might help, and making a sandwich with only one slice instead of two. Brown and wholemeal has more fibre. I can particularly recommend Vogel sliced wholegrain if you can find it. It's thinly, satisfying to eat and has a nice "chewy" feel which makes you feel you're eating a lot more than you're actually getting.. However if bread proves to be the problem you could try oatcakes or potato cakes although they don't really convert into sandwiches. Ricecakes are another alternative but they do rather feel like eating dry cardboard.
I'm not sure this sounds like gluten intolerance. My grandfather has coeliac disease and he gets terrible diarrhoea with evil smelling stools if he eats 'normal' bread, or sausages.
What type of bread are you eating?
I had the same symptoms as you and discovered it was a yeast intolerance not a gluten intolerance. Does beer, marmite and cakes have the same effect? I manage this by eating no more than two slices of bread a day and replacing it with wholemael pitta or tortilla wraps. Give it a go!

I have recently had to give up gluten and wheat as I have been found to be intolerent. I crave glutenous foods like a junky and could easily eat a whole loaf of granary my myself. The result however, was bloatedness, IBS, tiredness and finally malabsorption.


Unfortunately, there are few GF breads for me that I can actually say are 'nice'. I like the tesco own free from loaf, but that is about it. I've had to stop trying to substitute and change my thinking about snacks instead. Now instead of sandwiches, I normally have a small jacket potatoe, which is so filling, I don't need an afternoon snack either. I just have a proper dinner. I also cook up lots of small potatoes and eat them cold with mayo or other dips. Proper tortilla wraps or chips, tacos etc, are all corn based and so gluten free too.


You should try it and see if it helps. I was telling another AB just now that after going on this diet, I have felt healthier, happier, have lost 3 inches all over without changing anything else or doing more exercise. I'm less lethagic, less stuffy and bloated have absolutely NO IBS and generally feel better than I have in years.


Give it a go, if you are intolerent,l you should start seeing a difference within a few weeks. However, if you think this may be you, it would be better to go to the Docs and have a blood test before going Gluten free as the antibodies picked up from the intolerence or the specific coeliac antibodies are not detectable once the bowel has healed itself. You would have to then go back on Gluten to have the blood test. The benefits of being diagnosed coeliac are access to the coeliac society for lots of help and advice and of course prescription foods which are heavily subsidised.

thank you all for your suggestions i will try them, yes i do eat white bread normally hovis thick sliced (thats how much i love bread) i dont have sugar not even on cereals, this is the first day i have not eaten any bread and although i am missing it, so far so good with the tummy problems. thanks again
I had the same problem as you but I found out I can eat as much Tescos French stick as I like with no problem at all, give it a try.
