Mirena coil
3 Answers
Hello again!
Am planning to go to the docs tomorrow to have a chat about coming off the pill etc. What I wanted to know is, do any of you have any experience with the Mirena coil? It seems to be a good option, but I've also read that it is likely to cause spots. I know this alone isnt a good reason not to use a particular type of contraception, but its something that I would consider.
Thanks again!

I was having very heavy periods and was also much too fertile (I conceived 2 children while on the pill, and another after I'd I'd been sterilised!!). The mirena was given to me for teo reasons - first, it is the most efficient means of birth control (apart from hysterectomy, which is going a bit too far, I think!), and second because my periods were so very heavy.
It did me proud on both points. My periods became very light and eventually stopped altogether, although whether the cessationj was because of the coil or the menopause, I don't really know), and I didn't conceive again.
I didn't get any spots, weight-gain, or anything else like that. The only problem I had was an ovarian cyst shortly after the coil was fitted, but as I've had many of those over the years anyway, I can't say that that was a direct result of the coil.
I've recommended it to a lot of people; for anyone who has heavy peiods, it's just got to be better than a hysterectomy.

Hi there, I had one fitted about 18 mths ago and it's fine, certainly reduced my periods to virtually nothing. But there are potentially some side effects, including nausea, spotting and lower back pain, both of which I experience. Found a website http://www.qmc.nhs.uk/women/Services/MenstrualDisorder.htm which is quite useful if you are still considering it. There is a link on Discovery Health website where women are very down on it, quoting weight gain, spots (as per your concern), back pain, nausea, tender breasts, loss of sex drive.....and so on. The Mirena is hormone based, so you may have similar issues to being on the pill.
