What would a dangerous level be for a pulse rate?


I was on the cross-trainer at the gym yesterday and it said my pulse was 172!!!


Now I'm sure it must have been wrong, it can't have been nearly 3 beats per second can it???

It depends on your age.. health and what your goal is...
jenny...u send my pulse rate far higher than 172 !

i am late 20's. ideal weight and just want to get fit. Surely there must a level that is dangerous?

Zeus .. zeus zeus... how cute was that.....(smile)

172 is not abnormal with physical exertion. If it was that at rest you would have something to worry about.

OPTIMUM HEART RATE Your optimum heart rate during exercise should ideally be kept at 60-80% of your maximum heart rate, which you can establish by subtracting your age from 220. People who exercise regularly learn what their optimum heart rate feels like. As you become fitter, you will need to step up the intensity of exercise to maintain your optimum heart rate. To calculate heart rate, place two fingers on the pulse at the side of your neck or on your wrist. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply the number by four.

For your age the safe max rate is 136-164.


Your danger zone is 170.


Time of heart rate recovery is a good indicator of fitness.

The machines at my local gym stop when your heart rate reaches you maximum safe level.

However unless hooked up to an accurate heart monitor those machines are a bit hit and miss.
I would suggest that the most dangerous level would be a reading of 'nil' !
