does anyone know what happens when you suddenly come off the beta blocker propranolol instead of weaning yourself off it gradually?

Seriously thought you should come off gradularly as it is a shock to your body and not good. You might even want to get checked out by a heart specialist, my husband did and found that he didn't have high blood pressure at all, it was anxiety. The doc said that he could be treated with anti-depressants to bring down his adrenalin levels (sorry my fingers can't spell , it's Friday) or take St John's Wart, 1000mg a day. The St John's Wart is working and it's a natural substance, Superdrug have got them for 8.50 for 200 and that should last for four months. Check with your doctor first though.

What a coincidence!! I rang my GP today because I had decided to stop taking Sotalol (similar beta blocker to propanolol) and was suffering with terrible anxiety. Apparently, this was because I stopped them suddenly and I was advised to start taking the tablets again. They were originally prescribed for atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) but were helping me to stay calm as well. I would advise getting advice on how to wean off propanolol gradually!! Good luck. x
You should never come off long term medication such as this suddenly without consulting your GP because often there can be serious side effects which you may not know about.
Incidentally, did you know that one of the long term effects of being on propranolol can be attacks of Gout? It's one of the side effects listed in the explanatory leaflet which comes with the medication.
