Siamese twins
3 Answers
I've just been reading about the 29-year-old Tehran Siamese twin sisters, who are joined at the skull and are about to undergo a mind-boggling 4 day operation to try to separate them. This set me off thinking about Siamese twins in general. If one twin of a pair of Siamese twins died, say of a heart attack, what would happen to the other? I suppose there would be no other option but to then try to separate them, whatever the risk to the surviving twin. A bit morbid, I know, but intriguing. Any thoughts anyone?

The problem with most sets of conjoined twins is the sharing of limbs, internal or external organs, or blood supply, which usually means the death of one or both after separation.internal. Even in the case of conkoined twins dying of natrual causes, as occured with the original Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker, who were joined at the chest, the death of one caused terrible distress to the other, who died a few hours later. The Tehran sisters are aware that one, probably both of them will die, but they feel it is a risk they are prepare to take.
