All indications are that he was a very unhappy man (heavy drinker, 'insult' chat rooms etc.) and possibly that without personal support or professional help then he was destined to end his life anyway. But it would take a certain mentality to want to have an audience, right?

I disagree with you crete. My uncle committed suicide (hanging) and the father of a school friend did also (gassed in a car). I consider the actions of both, which the loved ones discovered, and the devastation they left behind to be the most selfish thing they could ever have done.
Whilst I am no doubt that they did not set out to do a selfish act, they were not thinking rationally enough to have that foresight, I consider that those who are left behind to deal with the consequences suffered more.
Sorry, just an opinion.

octavius, i agree with you that the devestation left for the family is awful. and that is my point the person who commits suidide has at that moment in time in their opinion no other option, and i dont think for a second anyone who does end their life ever does it without thinking about their family, in my opinion
I think he must have been fairly angry and pis*ed off off at the world to want to have everyone watch his suicide ...
I think this sort of thing is more likely to happen on sites where there are many users in great numbers (ie- Yahoo chatrooms) that keeps them totally anonymous and unlikely to ever get to know the other users.
I'm not sure if I feel so sorry for those who witnessed it (except if by accident) unless they were hanging around encouraging him, they could easily have logged off the website if they were so horrified...

Doctor Spock your name was in reference to the link you posted referring to the suicide on the site in question .
Or dont you remember posting about the site the guy was on ?
Thats all there was no other reference to you or your opinions so no need to get agitated .
As for being selfish im not sure someone suffering from depression can actually decide whether they are thinking of themselves or of others .
What i do know is i read a comment from one member of the chatroom who said some users were saying hang yourself , you cant even do that right .
Would you say it was allright to encourage someone mentally unstable to kill themselves ?
Well would you ?
Because if you would then you are mentally unstable and require some psychiatric help urgently my friends .
As i said ive suffered from clinical depression and after help from counsellors and my doctor and receiving medication i have got myself into a better frame of mind and a happier place .
What would i have done if someone had encouraged me to commit suicide ?
Truthfully i would rather not think about it .
