Dead Pools
11 Answers
Are dead pools morally wrong? William Hill no longer take bets on when somebody is going to die.
Personally, I think a dead pool can be quite good fun and am thinking of running one at the Lodge for our 1Christmas charity fund.
If you could choose three to cark it for 2008 who would they be?
I think I would opt for:
1) Ian Brady (constantly on hunger strike)
2) Duke of Edingburgh, Prince Philip.
3) Joe Longthorne
I feel this may be in bad taste, but if for charity is it really that bad?

They are known as a 'Tontine', and they are illegal, for obvious reasons. There is an excellent movie from a few years ago starring Peter Sellers and Michael Caine (amongst others) revolving around a tontine. In the UK the move was titled 'The Tontine, In the US it was released as 'The Wrong Box'. A hilarious movie!!

I just realized that I might be talking about a different kind of 'dead pool' than what Shadow Man is referring to. A tontine is an agreement between a group of (usually) rich men who each ante up a sizable chunk of cash which is then held in trust. The last man to remain alive collected all the cash plus interest!
