Airing Cupboard.
31 Answers
When I do the washing, I dry and Iron it and then I stick it in the airing cupboard, until the next lot goes in there and then I put it in the wardrobes etc. My friend asked me why I did it? I had no answer, I just said to air the clothes. Since I had my immersion heater thingy taken out cos I have a combi boiler now, I even had a little fan type heater thing put in there, like my nan has to help air the clothes some times. Why do I do this? Do my clothes need airing? I have just been doing this blindly because my nan did it and then my mum did and I do it and have done for the last 11 years with no idea why.

She then asked her Mum who said her mum did it.
They then asked her mum and she said...because the pan was to small!!
I think a lot of us are guilty of doing things just because our parents/grandparents etc did them!!

I dont do that, i wash, dry them on the line, iron them then put them in the wardrobe, i thought aring them was on the line?? i dont get it either, but then again my mum dont either so maybe its cos your mum and nan did it.
When you put them in the airer do they not get creased seeing as you have already ironed them?

Aww! LOL! I do everything the same as my mum, but none of it's like that! ;o) Only kidding, I think it's just that no-one has pointed anything out to me yet. Give it time, though, I only moved in with my two housemates a couple of weeks ago. :o)
I'm the same as 4get. I only iron something when I need to wear it (and only if it needs it!). My bloke's mum is strange: she irons everything and then when she wants to wear something, too! :oS

Its true - we do as Mum showed us - until we develop our own ways. When my Mum was ill (you couldn't tell because she was full of energy and irritable as hell) she asked me to do some ironing. I decided to collect and return and not have her glowering over me. I declined to take her nylon slips because they had no creases and I was worried I'd melt one (I never iron such things). She hit the roof, said dont bother if I didn't want to help, and told me to go before we both said something we regretted.
We didn't speak for 3 months!!!
I have had an airing cupboard thru out 34 years of marriage and now have to do without in new place when combi boiler goes in. I know its sad but I am quite concerned!!!!!

I wonder if it is to do with the fact that many years ago our mums didn't have 1800spin washing machines and tumble dryers and did have loads of terry nappies etc to wash. Perhaps with the mountains of washing and not so much room to dry them, they were put into the airing cupboard to dry them out completely. My granny used to iron everything or 'smoothing' as she called it, you name it, fuffly towels, socks, pants, everything. I would also think that in that era it was easier to 'smooth' things when they were slightly damp, hence put them in the aring cupboard afterwards. Personally, I iron very little, mrwarpigs work shirts and trousers, duvet covers (but only the nice ones), everything else is done as and when I feel like it, if ever!
