What interesting answers everyone! I find it fascinating that several people share the same thoughts about being buried alive. When I was a child, I had the same fear. But I blame my parents for having taken me to cinema to see the House of Usherawful! And an awful thing to do to a child. I still recall the nighmares!
Moon River- I actually played that at one of my funerals on Friday. The deceaseds husband asked for it. He couldnt remember the name, so he hummed it to me. I think its a lovely tune. For this funeral I chose Andy Williams singing it.
Leaving your ashes on the mantel: That too is a common practice. But it always leaves the rather uncomfortable decision to others, what to do, when youre no longer there. What do they do with all these ashes!
Smudge: Thanks for that. It gives a rather interesting audit trail of thoughts. Again, the prevailing thought was the fear of being buried aliveas well as the fear of vermin.
Recognising that its illegal to strew ashes into the sea, what are some of the other options? Would you prefer to have your cremains interred at a cemetery with a small stone of remembrance, or leave them at the crematory (I have my own thoughts about that), or cast the into the garden?
Thank you for all your thoughts. Its a wonderful insight t societys changing trends.
