Setting up a wireless connection?
29 Answers
Please help. I have a Router bought from Talk Talk and I am a Talk Talk customer. I have no idea how to set up a wireless connection.
I have my PC upstairs and the telephone socket with wires trailing to connect to the Internet.
I would be grateful if somebody can explain how to do this in step-by-step instructions and in layman's terms. (i hope that's not too much to ask).
Thank you very much!

most modern laptops and macs already are but if you have a desktop it will have to have a wireless card installed or a usb dongle (you may have got a dongle with your router it looks like a memory stick) have a read of ACs XP link in the previous post

yes correct much your computer connects to the router via the red lead then the router connects to the phone line via the grey lead (adsl) if your cd is not working you will have to set the router up manually, after it is configured and your wireless set up you can remove the red lead and put the router downstairs
do you need help to set it up manually? and you didn't say whether or not if your pc is wireless enabled

right the the bluetooth adapter will be no good unless it does wifi too (some do) so you may have to change it but we will forget about wireless for now and get the router working
right connections look at the back of the router plug the grey lead into the port marked ADSL then plug the other end of the grey lead into the adls port on the filter (the little box) then plug the filter into the phone line
next plug the red lead into the port marked LAN1on the router and plug the other end into the LAN port on your computer
then plug in the power lead
after you have done this then try to use the connect and go cd to configure the router(you will need to know your username and password)
Your username is usually your telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. (eg [email protected] ) and your password will be on the welcome letter you were sent. If you don't have the letter to hand then grab a pen and paper and ring TalkTalk's password reclaim line (0870 087 5562) from your home phone number and you should get your password. Write it down CAREFULLY paying attention to upper and lower case and numbers.
if the cd still fails then see the next post

if the CD setup has failed then follow these instructions to manually configure your router
1. open up the correct router admin page by browsing to http://192.168.1.1/WAN.html
2. when prompted enter the username and password, by default these are both "admin". Without the quotes obviously.
3. Under "Login Settings" on the main screen enter your TalkTalk username and password. .
4. Further down the same page you will see two fields "TCP MSS Option" which should be set to 1392 and MTU Option which should be set to 1432.
5. Press SUBMIT to save this
you should now able to connect to the internet so come back here and we'll set your wireless up

hey congats much we are halfway there!
right now to see if you are wireless enabled we'll try this first
hit start then connect to - if there is no mention of wireless in the list then click show all connections
look under the lan or high speed internet heading it will list your LAN devices again look to see if there is any mention of wireless if not then its probably not wireless enabled but just to check, while you are on the same page click -create an new connection
the new connection wizard should now appear so look half way down and and click view wireless networks
if you are now told that no adapter could be found its time to see your weather your dongle (the bluetooth adapter) will work so tell me make and model of it
if during the process you do find a wireless connection then again tell me what it says
