Stop eating take away, junk food or microwave food. Start your meals from scratch (it's more cost effective that way and you know exactly what you're putting in your body). Grill your meats, steam or bake your fish. Don't add butter to your potatoes. Fill up on salad and vegetables - you'll be less likely to scoff all those potatoes if you eat more veg - Tesco have got offers on veg at the moment, I think they change it every week so t's a good time to experiment with veg.
If you're feeling pekish, have a piece of fruit.
Make up little dishes of sugarless jelly, that will help a sweet craving and help you resist a bar of choccy.
Don't deprive yourself of anything, if you want a piece of chocolate then by all means have it, just don't over indulge.
My downfall is crisps, so if I MUST have a bag, then the french fries are pretty good for satisfying my need and they're one of the lower calorie bags too.

Exercise. Get some music or an audio book on your MP3 and get walking at a pace that will raise your heart rate - not just a stroll. Same goes for cycling. I find the time passes and I'm so engrossed in the audio book, I don't think about the fact I'm exercising.
Don't set out with unrealistic goals like "I will walk 10 miles today". I tend to start by saying I will walk to such and such a point, when I get there I assess whether I can continue to the next point and still have the energy to walk back again.
Do you have a Wii? Sounds daft, but get the Wii fit (or borrow from a friend?). There are aerobic workouts there and I can assure you that it works you out. I got th Wii Fit last Friday, on Saturday morning I was trying out the Step workouts. The way it works is that it senses when your weight is on the Wii Mat and if you time it right you get a 'perfect' on the screen, otherwise it just says 'OK'. Well, me being me I was determined to have 100% 'Perfect', and before I knew it I'd been doing it for an hour and 10 minutes!!
There's also a yoga section, I'd never tried yoga before and was surprised that I could feel my muscles working just by doing a few positions.
Water - keep hydrated and try to have a glass of water rather than a cup of te or coffee.
I hope all of that helps you start.

To loose weight you must burn off more calories than you take in so exercise is a must along with a sensible diet as already mentioned in previous answers.
Tips to beat cravings :-
* Try not to eat much after 6pm as this is usually the time when you burn off less calories (as you settle down to watch TV after work & teatime).
* When you feel peckish - clean your teeth, the lingering minty taste puts you off eating for a while.
* Drink cold water, the body uses calories to warm it up inside your body.
Hope the above is helpful.

It's BRILLIANT!!
I got a loan and was thinking "yeah yeah, this will be a bit of fun but that's it", but it really is working! My thighs are aching after competing with myself for those perfects LOL!!
The hula hoop too - OMG - It's brilliant in that you're not up and down, starting and stopping because the hoop has fallen down, I did 900 hoops to the left and 867 to the right and you really feel it on your waist! I was knackered afterwards though LOL
