Diabetes

My hubby has just been diagnosed with diabetes and taken it rather badly.
He is not overweight (quite skinny in fact) and virtually a vegetarian. He eats less fattening foods than me and cannot understand why him.
Do any fellow diabetics have any tips for him?

Oops http://www.diabetes.co.uk :-)
You are not necessarily born with type 1 diabetes, but it usually develops before the age of forty.
I believe that type 2 is probably more due to lifestyle, obesity etc.
Sounds as if your husband may be type 1, has he been prescribed insulin or just told to avoid sugar etc?
My daughter`s niece was diagnosed with type 1 when she was about ten years old and needs to inject insulin every day.

Hi Funnygirl,
My dad was dx with type 2 diabetes 14 yrs ago at the age of 51.
He also was not over weight, not a drinker, good diet etc so it's probably down to some get it some don't.
In the first 10 yrs it was controlled very well, just with diet and metformin. The diabetes did get worse however, and the tablets were upped and then upped.
In the last year he has had to go to insulin injections. Trial and error but is now on the right dose and is doing very well. He still works in the City btw and commutes 300 miles a day.
Read up on diets, join the Diabetic society, talk to the diabetic nurse and get all the knowledge you can.
Look after yourselves :D xxx

Hi
Diabetes can just come out of nowhere , but with a bit of adjustment he should be able to fit it into your life without it taking over. Encourage him to look after himself ( It is in his best interests to do this as well as he can - it isn't going to go away, so don't ignore it!)
I've been a type 1 for 34yrs and I'm still fit & healthy with no probs, because I do the best job I possibly can of making sure my glucose levels are "normal" Family and kids are very supportive, but I decided a long time ago, that it was up to me to make the best job I could of this. It doesn't hold me back and it's just not that big a deal.
I always reckon that there are much worse things to get! Support him and encourage him as it's not easy in early days. Stick with the veggie bit - great for cholesterol levels lol!
