I am 16 years old - tall and skinny. My hobby includes very heavy exercise, of which I won't be quitting anytime soon. How can I put on weight? I eat the most out of all my friends so thats not the problem. Is there some kind of diet that would help to gain some pounds?

it is the problem - if you dont gain weight you are not eating enough, very simple. Consider starting a form of resistance training to make sure weight gained is not fat. If physically eating enough is a problem try blending food together or invest in some cal shakes.
Try the following diet:  Breakfast - 1 cauldron of macaroni cheese.  Lunch - poached whole great white shark in parsley sauce.  Dinner - horse and camel pie (at least 3 of each in the pie), followed by 1 bathful of apple crumble and custard.  Additional snacks can include a few chocolate doorsteps and a few catering size packs of crisps.

Romeo - although you might think your'e funny, the odds are most ABers wont !.

mcquire88 - I can sympathise you in a way, i tried to gain weight for years, im now 29 and still have the same build regardless of what i eat, if you choose to go with any advice given, i wish you the best of luck, but what i would say personally is just be happy with the way you are as your good friends and family will no doubt be happy with it.

I really wouldn't worry too much. As long as you are eating, and exercising, you may just be a slim person. At 16 you are still growing and still filling out. At 18 we tend to get much rounder (more shapely) than we are at 16, and you may gain weight then. Either way, it is better that you are a slim adult who exercises, than one who plays around with food, trying to gain weight. If in doubt, see your Doc and find out if you actually are underweight.

Continue eating your regular diet but also once a day (before you go to the gym is best ) have a high cal weight gain shake.  You can get the powder to make them from most health food shops or the best place would be GNC they know what there talking about in there.

health food shops are useless for advice on any kind of sports nutrition
eat lots of protein, tuna, chicken and pasta are good for weight gain

My auntie is tall and skinny and a very active person! She could eat absolutely everything she wanted and still not gain weight even though she has tried to for years.

Sometimes particular bodies do not gain weight whatever you do.

Mac, you're still growing so don't despair, you will fill out naturally. To help the process along though, try this: train intensely for no more than about 30 mins, two or three times a week, and eat really well. I know you want to train more often, and for longer, but it's not productive; you need only stimulate growth, provide plenty of nutrition, and then let nature take its course. Train longer, and more often, and you'll simply be burning up precious energy, energy your body desperately needs for new growth. And forget about sets and reps and all the bs - just do whatever exercise you're doing til you can't continue, stop long enough to catch your breath, and carry on til you want to puke!  Oh, and stick to 'big', basic exercises - squats, chins, press ups, military presses, etc.  Keep it simple, nothing fancy - you're after results, not scores out of ten. You don't need to be using big weights either (in fact they'll slow your progress, 'cos you'll be struggling and your 'set' will be too short). Good luck!

PS Get some instruction on doing the exercises right, so you don't waste time and energy doing them inefficiently. And here's a good starting point, where you can 'chat' to others about the subject, or read their posts: http://tinyurl.com/4f2xc

once again I am astounded by the general lack of knowledge regarding healthy weight/muscle gain. First if you eat more energy than you use, you will gain weight unless you have some form of thyroid problem. People who claim they cannot do not eat enough. Thinking you are eating enough is not satisfactory. Eat every 2 hours, even if you are stuffed eat more. small portions, but every 2 hours. sometimes you will have to force yourself and its not pleasant.

In addition, keep workouts short, no more than an hour really, lift heavy weights and keep it very intense. Your body grows outside of the gym, not in it. Ignore the previous post, sets and reps are important measuring tools to determine exactly what stresses you are placing on your body. Try and sleep more as well.
