how long is too long to leave a dog on it's own

Dogs do have a concept of time, my dog will sit on the back of the chair and look out of the window everyday at 3.15 knowing that my kids are due home from school

As for leaving dogs on their own, as long as they have enough food and water and some toys to play with they should be fine

as long as they are used to their surroundings and wont pine or bark (like the new people's dog next door) then you should be ok leabing it for a few hours.

Depends on the age and type of dog. An older calmer dog would be ok for a few hours occasionally, but a puppy or active dog needs to be regularly let out and exercised, Don't have a dog if you can't regularly be there to spend time with it.
Word of caution, if you post this on Animals and Nature be prepared for the angry brigade to slate you for even asking such a question.

Dogs are smarter than we think, sometimes I leave the tv on for my dog and I came home the other day to find my dog sitting behind the sofa when Loose Women was on

Always used to leave the radio on for mine. That's on the rare occasion I left him at home. I only had to say "going to the pub" for him to get excited. I took him everywhere.

He used to show me the way home as well after a few!

I was having a ciggie in the pub garden when I noticed the landlords dog tied up in the corner with a For Sale sign around his neck

As I approached the dog to my amazement the dog started talking and was telling me that he was an ex army dog and was used to detect bombs out in Iraq

One night in the pub me and the old man both had a skinful. He said his way home, just through the side streets was quicker than mine, cutting across the park. When we left we said ok we'll go our own way and see who gets home first and both assumed the dog had gone home with the other. We actually both arrived home at the same time to find the dog sitting on the doorstep!

When I went back inside I asked the landlord how much he wanted for the dog and he said £20
I told him "That`s cheap for a talking dog"


I know he said "The dog keeps telling lies, that`s why he`s only £20"
