High temperature

Last night my 2 year old daughter had a temp of 40.6 - she's having calpol and ibuprofen, but her temp is rarely lower than 38 (been like this since tuesday). She had hand foot and mouth at the beginning of this week, the blisters have scabbed over now but she is suffering high temps. Took her to the GP yesterday, he said one of her ears is infected and prescribed amoxicillin (sp?).

Is it dangerous for her to have such a high temp? What should I do if it gets that high again?

High temperatures are common in children and they seem to cope with them quite well.Calpol and Ibuprofen are excellent in bringing down the temperatures.
Ear infections are also common in children and usually do not produce any dangerous complications.Antibiotics given by your doctor is the recommended treatment.

I would keep a very close eye on her temp - check it a lot. My little cousin had a febrile convulsion last year through having a high temp (although I think these are quite rare) -his mum didn't give him any medicine and when he got to hospital, the doctors struggled to bring his temp down. He had swollen tonsils, but not tonsilitis.
If my daughter has a temp, I give her calpol and ibuprofen and strip her down to her knickers, put a cold flannel on her head and make sure her window is open.
I'm sure that your daughter will be fine now she's on antibiotics.

I agree with the calpol (paracetomol) and ibruprofen as long as she isnt allergic. Because they are 2 different drugs you can give both of them. You may find it beneficial to alternate them through the day so give paracetomol at 6 hourly intervals and ibruprofen at 6 hours intervals but between (ie P at 12, I at 3, P at 6, I at 9 etc etc)
this can help keep stop her temp peaking so much.

Thanks for your replies, she was on calpol and ibuprofen but her temp still wasn't coming down, thats why I was concerned, but the antibiotics must've kicked in now because her temp is back to normal without the calpol etc. which is great but.....

She developed a rash behind her ears yesterday afternoon, its very red, spots all close together, not raised, I don't think she's aware of it. Today they're also on her face in patches but not as red or noticeable and the same on the back of her neck, her back and a patch on her tummy. Could it be a heat rash, or a viral rash connected to the ear infection, or something else? Any ideas? Does it need to be checked out?

No big deal as it is almost certainly viral
P.S She has had her MMR vaccine?

baby CRX had hers in front of ears and down the chin. i suppose having their hair down can make it worse.

ooh sqad, talking of legs (sorry K8, off topic). My sister got some insect bites on her legs recently, they reacted badly and in the end she had purple flowery patterns spreading out about 2 inches from each bite. She was in USA at time and was given AntiBs at A&E but i wonder if its something that she should be talking to her GP about??J

redcrx........nasty.......but what could the GP do about it, even if he knew that she reacted badly to bites? As soon as she has been bitten, she should take anti-histamines by mouth or even by injection, as it doesn't sound as though they were anaphylactic reactions which are of course the dangerous ones.

thanks sqad. Just worried that the reactions could get worse. 2 weeks before she went to US she got bites and they reacted but looked more like bruises, before that she didnt react at all.

yes she's had the MMR, thanks agin for the quick responses. Children eh - one thing wrong after another with them, and always evenings and weekends!! Looks a bit like that pic, behind her ears but not as red everywhere else.
