Apparently muscle is heavier than fat, so although you may have put on weight it may be that you've gained muscle.

I'm no expert, never been to a gym in my life but are you doing the right exercises. Sounds like you are building muscle rather than burning calories. Instead of weighing yourself take measurments of waist, thigh hips etc and I'll bet you are slimmer.
Measure yourself instead of weighing yourself.
apart from the gym, are you watching what you're eating?
Perhaps the gym's not right for you - trying just walking, or swimming. I stopped going swimming when the mate I went with couldn't afford it any more - I put on a few pounds (and inches) as a result. I don't like the gym so I wouldn't consider that, but walking instead of using the car all the time helped for me. I still can't lose the weight I want to but I have set a target to lose 5lbs by Christmas. Have you joined the AB Weight Club (first yellow sticky at the top of Body and Soul thread?
Firstly, you're really not overweight. Sounds like you are being too hard on yourself. However, in order to lose weight you need to take in less calories than the energy you expend during the day. This is why most people choose to eat less. I recently did a detox fast for 7 days- no food at all; and it made me realise that a lot of the time I eat when I really don't need to. Being hungry passes- your body will use up the fat stores first. I'm not advocating doing what I did (it was the Lemon Detox Diet and I did it in order to help my Ulcerative Colitis and hiatus hernia problems) but I learnt a great deal from doing it. So, maybe think carefully about what you eat and when you eat it. do you really need it? Are you genuinely hungry? Is the food going to do you any good? Will it fill you up? Are you going to eat all of it simply because it is on your plate, or stop the moment you feel 'content'? If we all ate only when we were genuinely hungry and stopped when we had eaten just enough, I am sure weight issues would vanish.
sara and Scarlett have said it all.
Healthy eating is the answer. Be aware of exactly what you are eating and be honest about it, portion size and food type. Diets are not the answer. Yuo need food for your metabolisim to work properly so you need your 3 meals plus two healthy snacks. No fried food. cakes, chocs and booze are out. carrots, fruit, nuts are in. plan meals and dont allow ytour self to get really hungry because that is when you make bad eating choices. make realistic targets dont set yourself up to fail. keep up with the gym but you need advice on what exercise programme you need. Ulitmately it is all about what you ant to achieve for yourself and not other peoples expectations of you. Keep well and enjoy life
