carbohydrates

hi all,
does anyone know of a good online carb counter please?
ive just been searching online but i cant seem to find what im looking for.
im trying to lose weight, plus keep my diabetes (type2) in check, so watching my intake of carbs seems to be what i need to be doing.
ive been filling up on fruit instead of snacking on more naughty things, but when i chatted to my diabetic nurse yesterday, she advised me to be careful and not over do it with the fruit, because of the carb/sugar content..
its difficult to know what to do for the best, and im a bit confuddled to say the least ...
if anyone has any help or tips, id be MOST grateful please..
thank you! :o)

Hi Loooby
If a little book is of interest, there's a Collins gem book called "Carb counter" ISBN no.978-0-00-717601-4. It has carb, fibre, fat, protein and calorie details on loads of foods, including branded stuff, plus tips and meal suggestions. For such a diddy book it's packed with info and costs about £3. Really worth it.

In reply to woofgangs link "yeah, right woofy" all I meant was that I couldn't`t fathom out what it was about, me being thick an all, I didn`t mean it to sound sarky at all.
Anyway loooby, I appear to have much the same problem as yourself with weight as I am now 13.5st and want to get back to about 11st, but it`s hard going. Guess I`ll have to give up the Pizzas.

You're very welcome, Loooby. I belong to that same happy club. To me the tricky bit is having regular carbs but not over-doing them. They all say "plenty of fruit n veg" but, as you've been advised, you do have to watch the sugary part of that. I remember being told "6 grapes = 1 piece of fruit n that's your lot". I hope you find the little book useful - actually, I'm grateful to you for reminding me about it - it's easy to get a bit sloppy about snacks in particular. Definitely no "special" diabetic foods - they cost a packet, usually taste vile, and are higher in fat than a big slab of real choc. x
hi lucca,
yeah the book looks great, thank you for suggesting it, i think it will be well used when i get it!
its difficult isnt it. i was surprised yesterday when the nurse said just a bananna is the equivalent to a meal when it comes to carbs... also a full glass of fresh orange juice is almost criminal isnt it?! lol
and yes, like you say just a handful of grapes, or a cup of berries, even a large apple, all carry a fair ol wack of carbs dont they?
i dont know about you, but when ive had grapes, i can eat a whole punnet, no problem! lol .. not any more though!
ive not long had a cheese sandwich on 2 slices of white bread with a handful of crisps ok. now, obviously i expected my sugar readings to go up, but on checking them 2 hours later, theyre actually lower than before i ate! lol ... before 7.5, after 5.6!
and then theres other times when you think youve been good, and you check your reading, and its a whopping high! ...
sometimes if ive left eating for a little longer than i should have, i can find my readings go up then too..
it can be very confusing cant it lucca, and sometimes you dont know what to do for the best! grrrrrr .... lol
hopefully the book will help! :o)

Hi Loooby
I agree 100%. Sometimes when I've tried to be ultra-good I go high and then at other times when I've just had a sensible nosh I get the trembles and I've hit under 3. Then add if you're not very well with something else, or upset etc it goes silly. I try to just get on with things and actually steer clear of things like support groups and Diab. uk as I found it made me more anxious!! My sis who teaches nursing advises "Cool it, and eat what u like in moderation". Sound advice, methinks! Incidentally, I asked Diab uk for a travel insurance quote for a 6-day break - their quote was 4x dearer than the one I eventually got for exactly the same cover! Stay away!
