Hello all. 3 months ago I broke the 2nd toe on my left foot. The hospital after 3 hours decided to tell me it was broken and strapped it to the 3rd toe and sent me home - I didn't even get to see the x-ray. After asking what should I do (having never broken a bone before in my life) they just said to speak to my doctor. Useful at 8pm on a Friday! A friend very kindly lent me crutches and after 2 weeks managed to see my gp. She said that no wonder it still hurts its strapped up wrong! To cut a long story short after 3 months of worrying and waiting I have managed to get a second opinion and am now having treatment as its still inflamed. Today I have been told that the reason it still hurts is because the bone has calcified and I have to take decalcifying tablets 4 times a day. After reading up on the internet (dangerous I know) its scaring me. Has anyone had any experience of this? Plus I have to have another 10 sessions of rehabilitation. Please help or put my mind at rest. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Limp-along Filbert.

I have broken my toes many times and the hospital and docs have always told me there is nothing that can be done for it. You just have to let it hea itsef and take ibuprofen. You must have done more than break your toe?
Sorry, haven't read it yet- I was just trying to get Mards off the latest posts list
why would they show you the xray? It is quite usual for a and e discharge you into the care of the gp after a broken toe. I don't understand why you took 2 weeks to see the gp, then moan that it's the hospitals fault that you did it on a friday night. If you'd have told your gp it was urgent, they would have seen you earlier (or you could have even seen the practice nurse, or gone to a walk in centre). Personally, from what you say it's just an unfortunate combination of circumstances that has lead to it still being a problem. I don't really understand what rehabilitation is in this context, so i cant comment on that, but i am sorry you've had such pain and worry

Hi all. The reason it took me 2 weeks to see the gp was that she had no availability even though I told the receptionist that it was urgent and I was standing there on crutches. I must explain that I live in Spain and the cuts have hit their NHS hard. The rehabilitation is ultrasonic waves and electric current. Has anyone ever taken these tablets?
filbert, then i take back all my comments. I have no knowledge of spanish healthcare
do you have a really good farmacia near you ,they can prescribe nearly as much as a gp , when I lived in Spain we had a brilliant one and he spoke several languages ( my spanish was only adequate). Try one if you can they tend to be more helpful.

No worries bedknobs. They're not that great over here even when its was working normally :-)
I broke my little toe many years ago(at school). I had my foot and leg(up to my knee) in plaster for six weeks. Seems times and treatments have changed, but possibly not for the better.
This is probably too late now, but when I broke a toe the hospital (NHS) got me a special rubber boot to wear while it healed up. It made it all so easy.

Not with me unfortunately. Just strapped it up with elastoplast and told me to talk to the doc.
have broken several toes - was told that there was very little to be done about it and healing would take place in due course - it did - had no treatment at all. -
