England haven't kicked a ball yet, so what's going to happen when they lose a match?

Why do they do it? Does anyone know?
The 'English disease'........flourishing in Europe as ever, dragging the name of ordinary footy fans through the mud and perpetually grabbing all the wrong headlines.
My friend's son is out there at the moment. He said it's kicking off quite badly with small gangs of French blokes starting trouble.

He seems fairly concerned.
Being goaded into it by locals and media.

TBH, they'll all be home soon yet a load of foreign yobs will still be chucking bricks at trucks in Calais.

I cant help feeling sorry for the local businesses, cafe/bars etc who have probably been looking forward to this Month for the extra Francs they would be earning, but there looks so much damage, they will probably be closed.
Don't think they will earn any Francs - they have been using the euro for many years now. :-)
I once heard a radio interview with a few of these football hooligans, and some of them said that they go to matches for the fighting, not the game.
They should round up all the trouble makers, charge them, send them home and ban them from travelling to future events like this.

I've heard excuses about them being goaded but why can't they just ignore it or walk away or call the police and let them deal with it.

I also feel for the local businesses, an awful cost despite any boost to business with all the damage and, I imagine, it's very unpleasant for the staff trying to work through all this.
But why should they put up with being goaded ! After saying that, I do accept some of them do love to cause trouble.
Reports in that an England fan is now fighting for his life, it's awful.

A lot of the trouble has been caused by Russian hooligans. England fans tend to be loud as well as drunk and are often unfairly targeted because of this
Of course there are also a lot of idiots among them
Way back in 1973 I postulated that all football, except for local leagues, should be banned for a year in order to bring a sense of proportion (I was alarmed by the effect it had on adolescent boys). I am still of that opinion.
I've just seen some footage on the news. Whichever nationality started it, I don't understand why they can't just enjoy the matches and the buzz from being at a major tournament. You don't see that at tennis or cricket. Why does football attract thugs?
I know most football fans aren't thugs, BTW.

lol ... I don't believe you would have said the same thing had Engerland been playing another team.
What I do find ridiculous is the amount of idiots who remain and become confrontational with the Police after tear gas has been used. We're I anywhere near a mêlée of such sort I'd get away from the area and situation ASAP.
Anyone remaining ought to be rounded up, arrested and on a one way ticket home at the earliest opportunity, there's simply no excuse for it.
I wouldn't have been dating the same thing because it would not have happened
Russia is to be fined by UEFA, who must be wondering how these animals were allowed to smuggle flares into the stadium in such a supposedly high level security scenario
It is perplexing as to why(at the stadium) there wasn't a line of Police and/or stewards between the opposing fans, which resulted in scenes not dissimilar to Heysel.
That said, in my experience a line of stewards alone at a football match are invariably about as much use as a catflap on a submarine.
//Anyone remaining ought to be rounded up, arrested and on a one way ticket home at the earliest opportunity//

If I were the French authorities I'd go further and ban them from entering France in the future.
I think it's been established that it wasn't the English fans at fault.

Eve - very naive attitude. You can't just 'walk away' from someone who is attacking you.
Indeed: far from the fault of England fans, nor indeed most Russians either to be fair. But while some England fans were begging in an embarrassing way at least they weren't going round trying to kill people. Which seems to have been the intention of some Russians.
Fans of Wales, England and Russia will all be in Lille later in the week. England's game with Wales is in the small city of Lens next door and there's an alcohol ban there so guess where they'll go instead ...
