Ladies: Being the man in the relationship? Male needs help

Whilst with new girlfriend she made a comment about "always being the man in a relationship". Although I picked up on it, it wasnt appropriate to investigate that theme at the time.

Wishing to be absolutely clear, please explain what that comment means, and how I can avoid it being applied to me (as it is a negative right?) Thanks :-)
