One comment you made Poodi, was that it's better to have an expensive ring to leave to your family, then you mention having kept your mum's engagement and wedding rings - would they mean any less to you if they were cheap? My engagement ring from my first marriage was from Argos and I loved it. I certainly wasn't ashamed about it's cost. My engagement ring from Mr Mac was chosen and paid for by him before he proposed to me. I have no idea where he got it or how much it cost and I really couldn't care less. What matters to me is that he picked something so lovely and that he wanted to marry me.
Similar situation happening in my family. Hate it hate it hate it. Idiots!

Just to add I never have any money and we do struggle but i would rather have no ring than a ring from Argos, if that makes me snobby then so be it.
I wouldnt care where the ring came from. But I bet they dont get married for years. To me engagement is just that and I would have to get married with the year, probably why he's not asked me yet lol
4getmenot same with me hun
whenever someone says to me 'my boyfriend proposed to me' I always say 'oh lovely whens the big day?' I actually had one friend say 'well we arent in any rush' why get engaged then
theres no rush hun
ya dont need anythin to say you love each other
but it is nice getting engaged and etc xx
yer it is nice but I know some people that have been engaged for years. Why??
i know my parents are engaged but not married have been for 27yrs
only cos they cant afford to not even a regestry office
at some point in them 27 years they could have afforded it
probs lol
that is what they tell me lol
they might of not wanted to maby xxx
more likely so they shouldnt have got engaged
exactly i do agree with you hun xx

LOL LOL...I agree.

Just been talking with Mrs sqad at breakfast and she said that she wouldn't like people to know that it came from Argos.........but there again, we are both snobs.
Maybe I am looking at it from a naive way, but I am 19 years old, and got married 3 weeks ago, to a man who is 7 years my elder. We had been engaged for 18 months (just after my 18th Birthday) and he asked my dad if he could marry me (to which he said yes)
He saved up for a diamond ring from an antique shop, and my wedding ring is my great grandmothers ring.
My parents are very traditional and paid for the wedding (for the exceptions for which is paid by the groom, like the rings, ceremony, etc.)
And me and my husband have a flat together (which is my parents and we rent it off them, and we have done it up ourselves)
I believe however, yes we are young, but it depends on how you go into a marriage, whether you do it light-hearted and on a whim. Thinking of the big day and the party, or the people who look forward, want the future together, and are genuinely compatible.
All of the women in my family married under the age of 21, so my age is nothing unusual.
We are happy, and intend to stay together for a long time. I think that is enough.
Oh and we've known each other for almost 4 years.
***5 years even!
thats lovely choc, a very long engagement but you were saving up and had every intention to get married. Most I know that got engaged and didnt set a date are no longer together. You seem very wise for someone so young. Good luck and I wish you all the happiness in the world x

I was 21 and my ex 20,good luck!
so poodi, i am still intrigued ... my engagement ring cost £250 - how many years of happy marriage will that get me?
My sister and her husband married two yearsago after an engagement of 31years... twice weddings were arranged but postponed due to family problems when it finally happened it ws one of the nicest weddings you could imagine and as so many of the guests knew one another there was no his side her side and it finally seemed absolutely right... I married my ex when I was 22 and he was 24 lasted 13 years My engagement ring was only £50 and my wedding ring 24ct came from a pawnshop Yet I know people who married childhood sweethears and are still very happy, and others who have been round the wedding tree a few times ... at least they are thinking about doing it in pretty much the right order not kids first then get married when they are old enough to be bridesmaids and pageboys
