i was born in 1954 so I today have been sent a letter saying that I MAY-note May- be able to claim a state pension in 2020 but not necessarily on my birthday.
Excuse me? i am being robbed. Worked all my life, paid my NI for MORE than 30 years. I will be dead before I get anything back as many of my friends are.
Comments and suggestions please.

I assume it's the same for everyone of your age. I doubt the average worker pays enough NI in 30 years to cover 20 years' worth of state pension.
State pensions were more affordable when people died earlier, but now people are living 10-15 years longer.
I never understood why the age for women was 60 for so long.

And if I remember correctly your pension doesn't start on your birthday unless your birthday is on a Monday. It starts from the first Monday after your birthday. I lost 6 days and was well annoyed.

The government should not be expecting the average worker to pay enough NI in 30 years to cover 20 years' worth of state pension. They don't expect those out of work to have paid in enough to cover what they claim in welfare.

Suggstions ? Not many. You can complain to your MP. But that rarely gives satisfaction. Unless you can get a national protest going, there's not a lot you can do bar accept it. Teach your grandchildren neer to trust kings nor governments maybe. One either has to gather personal wealth over the years to pay for one's own retirement, or spend everything, have nothing left, and become unemployed for those in work to pay for.

If I took my pension now, and I did enquire, it wouldn't cover the mortgage, so I'm stuck for a few years more at least, barring being made redundant.

We are being scammed. I pay for everthing but if did not work would be better off. I an getting out of this place asap

I was responding to rosamundjon's suggestion that it was scam as she had paid NI for30 years.

I know pensions are not paid from NI (it all goes in and out of the pot) but ultimately everything has to be paid for.

Having said that, for those who have to wait longer for a pension there will be entitlement to benefits won't there if they are on no/low incomes so maybe the changes won't save as much as is claimed.

Who wants to be on benefits, factor? I don't want to be on benefits or pension credits- I want to be paid my pension when I was told i would get it. Now i am told that i MAY get it in 2020! MAY!

The pensions age has not been sustainable for a long time. Governments over many years have shied away from taking the necessary action.

factor £30. in Spain you get 800 euros/£ per month with only 15 years contributions. Where is the money going here?
