I need advice from ABers. I am considering buying a new laptop
and have a hankering for the same make as i have now. The Dell
Inspiron. I only need the laptop for the usual stuff, online shopping, online banking etc. I don't need it for any business purpose.
it has to be a 15inch screen, and have windows 10.

my current laptop is getting on a bit, and is getting slower and slower. Will a new one improve on speed.
what Ram, spec is good. I am a bit of a technophobe and don't know what's good against the not so good.

Probably best to go straight to Dell, the only rider I would give is at least 8gb ram to handle windows 10 and modern programs. Put a good antivirus on right from the start

That said after a quick skim the minimum price is 699 so maybe reconsider sticking with Dell.

I have looked at Dell but their prices are much more expensive than PC World.
The one i have linked to is £479. with free delivery.
what other than windows 10 do you need.

Any new machine will be faster than your old one. That seems a bit pricy if all you want it for is online shopping and banking.
Do you need office software too?

Mine was £379, a Lenovo, which is more than adequate for a whole host of modest software and gaming

i have had this Dell since 2007, so you can tell its getting on a bit. working on windows 7 currently...

Good grief yes.
Basically any laptop you buy will have more than enough RAM to cope with Windows 10 (which will be a bit of a culture shock if you are used to 7.
Another consideration is the battery life. Mine isn’t great, which may have kept the price down. But I don’t mind as I don’t take it anywhere.

It’s that’s what I’d have thought.
If you already have it, with the key, or multiple licence, you should just be a me to reinstall it on your new one.
Or you could splash out and get the latest version.

i downloaded a Free anti virus programme that Chris put me onto. Avast.
How do you transfer stuff like photo's onto a new laptop.
i have quite a collection as it stands, and all
data like letters etc.

I downloaded Libre office and found it justified the saying “it’s free for a reason” :-)

Nonetheless it’s undoubtedly cheaper !

Yes that sounds like a good idea if you don’t have an online back up

Use a usb stick. Plug in to your old laptop, copy and paste photo's,
music and documents etc. Then remove usb stick and plug into the new laptop and copy and paste from usb stick.

emmie that should meet all your needs, however I can't get on with windows 10 and reverted back to windows 7 (although keep getting messages from windows advising to upgrade, at a price), but I guess it's just a case of keep practising with windows 10.
