I presume that you have a rental agreement ?

The most common rental agreement for domestic housing in the UK is an Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement.

This sets out the landlords and tenants obligations, how the deposit money is handled, how the agreement may be ended and other provisions.

You will need to read this to find out where you stand. If you don't have one you don't really have a leg to stand on - unless you decide to squat !!
unless its something fantastic call his bluff and say your willing to pay him the same or move out. You would have signed an agreement for a set period I would imagine so if they try and raise the rent during that period you could refuse to do so.
