A colleague is trying to find IBAN details etc for an account at this bank. It isn't theirs but for a friend overseas. If anyone can identify the bank - not necessarily the branch, could they help?

just seen your Question,I work in the bank world and yes this is Co-Operative but the IBAN is the international bank account number the only person who can get these details are the person in control of the a/c..no other person can get them details because thay are the owners bank a/c detials but international payments!Thay are always printed in the TOP RIGHT HAND OF THE STATEMENTS with all banks its banking law!!..hope this help!!

Commonly the IBAN number is a code specific to the bank with the individual's sortcode and account number appended to it.

The easiest way to get it is to ask the account holder but it's not the only way.
A Co-Op IBAN would look something vaguely like:
GB12 CPBK 08924912345678
http://tinyurl.com/4va33
where the first 6 numbers are the sortcode and the 1-8 the account number.
The first part (GB12CPBK) would vary from bank to bank and is the bit that *identifies the bank* (that's what IBAN is for).

On that same site (the "tinyurl" link above) there's a link where you can perform an integrity_check

 

Either way I would speak to co-op before doing anything further.

I am not sure people can do anything with a sort code unless they have the account number as well. ANd they could have done what I would have done had it been business hours - called my own bank and asked them if they could help.

I think a dedicated scammer would pay the few quid for the directory themselves :)

In A Pickle, I wouldn't worry in the slightest about a sort code being on display. I work for a bank and I'd be happy to have mine made known the the known universe.
At best, it tells people which branch you bank with. Without the account number (an 8 digit number means that hypothetically, there are 100,000,000 possible combinations) it's pretty useless.

Anyone anywhere can get hold of a "Sort Code Directory" which is like a phone book and you can either look up the sort code and it'll tell you which bank and branch it is, or vice versa.
In my line of work, it's kind of my job to be suspicious of everyone I deal with and this is of no concern at all to me.

Also, remember that anytime that you give someone a cheque that you're giving them your sort code AND account number (and name and signature). If the cheque is guaranteed, they'll have your card number too.
Your neuroticism (if it is that) will probably make your account safer than the average Joe if it means that you dispose of receipts and bills/statements safely so console yourself with that!

Can you tell me if the sort code 253027 exists? I have made an interenet payment to it in error - got the payee name and the acct number right, but the sort wrong. Want to know how to get my money back... can you help?
