Calor gas heaters

What with the recent cold snap I have found that my existing heating system using electric storage heaters is not up to the job.

How cost effective are portable Calor gas heaters? Do they compare favourably to electric storage heaters? WHat kind of cost per kWh could I expect. How long will the bottle last?

I have bought two halogen heaters - quick to heat, cost effective and extremely portable.

Not as big and bulky as calor gas either.

I would avoid freestanding gas heaters like the plague. They produce considerable water vapour and will make your home damp, plus you also need considerable ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning as there is no other way of removing the products of combustion. They are more expensive to run. Additional electric heaters like oil filled radiators are the safest to use. Consider installing gas or oil fired central heating.

We had the same problem, the storage heaters were not powerfull enough, the only answer was to fit a full central heating system using oil as where we live on Anglesey there is no piped gas available

Halogen heaters

Quick to heat up - true. Portable - true. Cost effective? - maybe. They are cheap to buy but use normal tariff rate electricity. Don't be conned by the halogen bit - it generates no less heat per kilowatt/hour of electricity consumed than any other instantaneous electrical heater.

I think the halogen heaters are cost effective because the heat is instant.
As a quick boost during cold snaps they are fine. They are also silent, unlike fan heaters.

They are not meant as permanent, stand alone heating, nor are calor gas heaters.
